Though we all worry about spoiling our child, rest assured that you cannot spoil your child with love. Love doesn’t spoil children. Love is imperative to a child’s healthy development, and it’s just not possible to love your child too much. They need caring adults to spend time with them, play with them, teach them, protect them, and enjoy life with them.

It’s a parent’s job to provide love, safety and encouragement. The process of growing up provides children with lots of challenges. Try to listen openly and understand their situation and communicate honestly with them when they have difficulties and letdowns in their life.

Set appropriate limits with your child and then adhere to them. Establishing limits with your child gives them a sense of safety and security.  Sometimes parents do not set limits because they don’t want to fight with their children. They don’t want to cause bad feelings. They may beg a child to comply. Or they may make a rule and fail to enforce it. They may nag without ever enforcing the rules. None of these helps children. When your child fails to adhere or comply with the boundaries you’ve set for them, be firm yet kind in your response. This lets them know that you’re serious about the rule but dedicated to helping and loving them.  Bear in mind though that each child is different and what works for one child may not work for another.  For example, one child may respond well to the direct approach of telling them a specific time to be home, where another child may need a gentle reminder that it’s now time to come home.

Develop a firm but kind manner of making and enforcing your household’s rules and expectations.  There’s no need to fear our children, and there should be no need to instill a sense of fear in our children in order to get them to comply.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all infants should ride rear-facing starting with their first ride home from the hospital for child safety. They should remain rear-facing until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat’s manufacturer. At a minimum, children should ride rear-facing until they have reached at least 1 year of age and weigh at least 20 pounds.

There are 2 types of rear-facing car safety seats: infant-only seats and convertible seats.

Infant-only seats

* Are small and have carrying handles (and sometimes come as part of a stroller system).
* Are used only for travel (not for positioning outside the vehicle).
* Are used for infants up to 22 to 32 pounds, depending on the model.
* Many come with a base that can be left in the car. The seat clicks into and out of the base so you don’t have to install the base each time you use it. Parents can buy more than one base for additional vehicles.

Convertible seats (used rear-facing)

* Can be used rear-facing, then “converted” to forward-facing for older children. This means the seat can be used longer by your child. They are bulkier than infant seats, however, and do not come with carrying handles or a separate base.
* Have higher rear-facing weight and height limits than infant-only seats, which makes them ideal for bigger babies.
* Have 2 types of harnesses

Whenever we are faced with something new, with a change we want to make, or one that seems to be being thrust upon us, it’s important to change the filters that we’ve been looking through. If you are a Baby Boomer who is reinventing yourself in midlife, it might be time to see the world with new eyes.

A child’s view

Perhaps it is time to see the world with new eyes. Be willing to be live in expectancy of being surprised. Have the curiosity and imagination of a small child. Expect the unexpected.

Each day as you awake, tell yourself that today you will experience a miracle – and then look for it all day. You may be surprised at just how many you’ll find.

No more boxes

We often limit ourselves by the need to define and interpret everything. We go through life putting everything into boxes. Instead begin to wonder. Find several potential meanings to everything that is happening in your life – rather than making your experiences fit in a preconceived idea.

See it all with wonder

Whatever you do, don’t try and be right about everything. Actually, it’s a lot of fun to stop when you hear something you might not agree with and say, “isn’t that interesting?” I wonder what a person’s life experience brought him or her to that belief. And, if I believed that, what would my life be like. Try it on for size. Don’t dismiss it so easily. Find value in every opinion.

See what it’s like to relinquish previously held ideas as you experience and witness your life. Become an observer rather than a reactor. Be aware that you have the power to interpret and add meaning in any way you wish. Be willing to let go of the stories and assumptions you have held for so long.

How much Joy can you stand?

You may just find something new in each day. You’ll definitely discover feelings of Joy you have never experienced before. Delight in the coming change. Feel the innocence of new life as it is emerging in you. I guarantee that if you do, you’ll find more love, more beauty and absolute divinity in everyone and everything. What a life!
